The Utility of Acellular Dermal Matrix (Surederm®) as a Temporary Substitute for Tendons in High-Voltage Burn Injury

Abstract
Treatments of tendon injuries of hands include direct suturing, tendon graft, and tendon transfer, in which temporary tendon spacers can be used. In case of electrical burn wounds, tissue necrosis can progress further, which results in instability of the spacer. A 41-year-old man sustained high voltage electrical burns on his right hand. Debridement was performed and total rupture of extensor indicis tendon was noted. ADM (Surederm) was applied to bridge the tendon defect, overlapping each end. The function of extensor recovered to a degree of extensor lag. The authors would like to introduce a case of solving these problems utilizing acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as a temporary substitute for extensor tendon defect of hands in electrical burn. It can protect each end of injured tendon, preserving space for tendon gliding without discomfort. Moreover, it could be expected to preserve tendon function without tendon graft.
